Before joining Orion Strategies, Lee Wolverton worked in the news business for more than 36 years, most recently as vice president of news and executive editor of HD Media, publisher of the Charleston Gazette-Mail and Herald-Dispatch in Huntington. Over the course of his career as a lead editor, he presided over roughly two-dozen newspapers, guiding his staffs to hundreds of state and national awards. A former investigative reporter, Wolverton also won state and national recognition for his work, most recently a Golden Quill Award for investigative reporting.

Getting his start in Pittsburgh, Wolverton reported for every major publication there before becoming an assistant metro editor at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He served as the local editor at the Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press and took on top editor positions at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and Virginia before landing in West Virginia. 

As managing editor at The Roanoke (Va.) Times, Wolverton was tasked with developing and recruiting top editors for other BH Media papers. His vast coaching tree includes more than a dozen reporters and editors who went on to become lead editors and others who have gone on to newsroom leadership roles in public radio and at the Washington Post.

In addition to vast management experience and journalistic and media law expertise gained from his years as an investigative reporter and an editor leading investigative projects, Wolverton brings an inside-out knowledge of crisis communications and media relations along with an extensive and widely varied research and writing background.
